Abstract
Granular vinyl chloride polymers are made by polymerizing vinyl chloride alone or in admixture with minor amounts of other monomers such as vinyl bromide, vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, methyl methacrylate or octyl acrylate while dispersed in an agitated aqueous alcohol medium containing 35 to 65% by volume of methyl or ethyl alcohol in the presence of a small amount of polymerization catalyst and 0.05 to 0.5 parts per 100 parts of the monomers of a 25 to 65% hydrolysed polyvinyl ester such as polyvinyl acetate, propionate or butyrate. The catalyst may be an organic peroxide such as lauryl, acetyl, benzoyl or chlorobenzoyl peroxides or mixtures of these and the process may be made continuous. Specification 671,446 is referred to.
