Abstract

Polyolefin-vinyl halide graft polymers are made by dissolving an olefin polymer in a monomer containing at least 70% by weight of a vinyl halide at elevated temperature and pressure, and then polymerising the monomer. Olefin polymers specified are those of ethylene, propylene and butylene, and copolymers of ethylene with acrylic esters vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride and propylene. Comonomers specified for use with vinyl chloride are vinylidene chloride, vinyl esters, acrylonitrile, maleates, fumarates, acrylates and methacrylates. The monomer/polymer mixture is preferably polymerized in dispersion in water. The graft polymers may be blended with other polymers, e.g. polymethyl methacrylate, butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers, copolymers of acrylonitrile and styrene (including methylstyrene), polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride and vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers.
