Abstract

Graft polymers are made by polymerizing in suspension a mixture of 95-25% by weight of a vinyl halide or a monomer mixture containing at least 70% by weight of vinyl halide and 5-75% by weight of a polyolefin,at least part of which is present in finely-divided form. Monomers specified are vinyl chloride and, as comonomers, vinylidene chloride, vinyl esters, acrylonitrile, acrylates, methacrylates, maleates and fumarates. Polyolefins specified are polyethylene, polypropylene, polyisobutylene and polyoctene. The products mouldable materials are made by blending the graft polymers with polyolefin-incompatible addition polymers, e.g. polyvinyl and polyvinylidene chlorides, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers, polymethyl methacrylate, styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers and butadiene-styrene copolymers.
