Abstract

Polymers or copolymers of vinyl chloride are formed in aqueous suspension in the presence of a copolymer of styrene and an alkyl acrylate, having at least six carbon atoms in the alkyl group, dissolved in the monomer. The styrene copolymer may be preformed in situ, may contain 20-80% by weight of alkyl acrylate and may form up to 50% by weight of the final composition. The vinyl chloride may be copolymerized with minor amounts of vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, alkyl acrylate, acrylonitrile or vinyl esters. Polymerization is effected in the presence of polyvinyl alcohol, hydroxyethyl cellulose or polyethylene oxide and benzoyl or lauroyl peroxide or azo-diisobutyronitrile.
