Abstract
Plasticized and optionally stabilized copolymers are obtained by copolymerizing 69 to 95 weight per cent of vinylidene chloride with less than 35 weight per cent of vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile and/or styrene, and with less than 15 weight per cent of one or more monomers of a plasticizing and optionally stabilizing character selected from unsaturated, optionally epoxidized esters of mono or polycarboxylic acids, either the acid or alcohol component of said esters containing at least 9 carbon atoms. The above monomer may additionally be copolymerized with glycidyl acrylate and/or methacrylate. The copolymers may be prepared in aqueous suspension or emulsion in the presence of catalysts, e.g. lauroyl peroxide, 2,4-dichlorobenzoyl peroxide and azodiisobutyronitrile, and suspending agents, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, hydroxypropyl cellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose. Many suitable esters are listed, including aliphatic and cycloaliphatic alcohol esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids; dialkyl, dicycloalkyl, diaryl, bis-epoxyalkyl and bis-epoxycycloalkyl maleates, fumarate and itaconates; vinyl and allyl esters of carboxylic acids and epoxycarboxylic acids; and mixed alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl and alkenyl esters of succinic, glutaric, adipic and sebacic acids. Examples describe the copolymerization of vinylidene chloride and vinyl chloride with (1) di-2-ethylhexyl itaconate, (2) dilauryl itaconate, (3) hexyl glycidyl itaconate, (4) ethyl glycidyl itaconate, (5) di-2-ethylhexyl itaconate and glycidyl methacrylate, (6) dilauryl fumarate, (7) hexyl glycidyl maleate, (8) di-2-ethylhexyl fumarate and vinyl epoxystearate, (9) vinyl caprylate and glycidyl acrylate, (10) vinyl palmitate, (11) acrylonitrile, vinyl laurate and glycidyl methacrylate, (12) vinyl 2-ethyl-hexyl succinate and vinyl epoxystearate, (13 and 14) vinyl stearate, (15 and 16) epoxidized allyl tallate, (17) vinyl epoxy-stearate, (18) 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, (19) epoxidized allyl tallate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, (20, 21 and 24) nonyl acrylate, (23) dodecyl acrylate, (25 and 28) decyl acrylate, (26) nonyl methacrylate, (27) epoxy-stearyl acrylate and (29) ethylhexyl acrylate and glycidyl methacrylate. The copolymers may be blended with one another and with copolymers of vinylidene chloride with vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, styrene, glycidyl acrylate and/or glycidyl methacrylate, and examples describe composiions comprising vinylidene chloride / vinyl chloride / epoxidized allyl tallate copolymer and (15) vinylidene chloride/vinyl chloride copolymer and (18) vinylidene chloride/vinyl chloride/2-ethylhexyl acrylate copolymer. The copolymers may be compounded with conventional stabilizers, e.g. calcium ricinoleate and sodium pyrophosphate, and extruded to form tubes or blow moulded to form films.
