Abstract

A method of forming a compatible mixture of at least two normally incompatible polymers, selected respectively from a first class comprising polyolefins and a second class comprising polymers obtained by the radical polymerization of monomers containing at least one vinyl group, comprises the steps of first preparing at least one graft copolymer from a polymer of the first class and a monomer which on polymerization gives a polymer of the second class, and then intimately mixing said graft copolymer or copolymers at elevated temperature with two to twenty times the weight of graft copolymer of a mixture of the polymers to be made compatible. In a modification of the process, at least one of the polymers to be made compatible is formed in situ from its monomer during the mixing process. Specified polyolefins are polyethylene, polypropylene and polyisobutylene. Specified vinyl compounds are styrene, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, butadiene and allyl chloride. In the preparation of the graft polymer, the polyolefin may be activated by irradiation. Examples describe the formation of compatible mixtures by grafting styrene on polyethylene and mixing with (1 and 2) polyethylene and polystyrene and (4) polyisobutylene and p polystyrene; (3) by grafting styrene on polypropylene and mixing with polyethylene and polystyrene; and by grafting vinyl acetate on polyethylene and mixing with (5) polyethylene and polystyrene; (6) polyisobutylene and polystyrene, and (7) polyethylene and a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer.
