Abstract

The following adhesive compositions for heat-sealing adhesive tapes (see Group VIII) are specified: (i) 78 parts vinyl chloride-acetate copolymer, 20 parts tricresyl phosphate, 2 parts lead stearate; (ii) 70 parts vinyl chlorideacetate copolymer, 30 parts di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate; (iii) 40 parts nitrocellulose, 60 parts raw castor oil; (iv) 80 parts polyvinyl acetate, 20 parts triglycol di-2-ethylbutyrate; (v) 45 parts cellulose acetate, 55 parts methyl phthalyl ethyl glycollate; (vi) 75 parts ethyl cellulose, 25 parts hydrogenated methyl abietate. Wax compositions containing up to 25 per cent of wax-compatible polymers, &c. are applied to the side of the tape opposite the adhesive. Several waxes are specified, and compatible substances are: polyethylene, polyisobutylene, butyl rubber, polychloroprene, ethyl cellulose, cellulose nitrate, acetate, &c., superpolyamides, vinyl polymers, vinylidene polymers and copolymers with acrylonitrile, &c. Examples disclose the following compositions: (i) 95 parts beeswax, 5 parts ethyl cellulose; (ii) 10 parts n-butyl methacrylate resin, 90 parts spermaceti wax; (iii) 7 parts polyisobutylene, 93 parts paraffin wax; (iv) 15 parts polyethylene, 85 parts paraffin wax.
