Abstract

Heat-sensitive adhesive compositions are prepared by a process wherein an aqueous dispersion of a plasticizer that is solid at room temperature is prepared by emulsifying the plasticizer in a molten state in an aqueous medium, and the resulting dispersion is mixed with an aqueous dispersion of a thermoplast at a temperature below the melting-point of the plasticizer. The compositions may also comprise normally liquid plasticizers. Specified thermoplasts are polymers of vinyl chloride and of vinyl, acrylic, methacrylic and crotonic esters. Specified solid plasticizers are diphenyl, dicyclohexyl, dimethylcyclohexyl and methylphenyl phthalates, N-alkylated toluenesulphonamides and alkyl p-toluenesulphonates. Specified liquid plasticizers are di-2-ethylhexyl, dibutyl and diisobutyl phthalates. The dispersions may be used to coat paper and foils. Examples describe aqueous dispersions comprising dicyclohexylphthalate and (1) polyvinyl propionate and a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, (2) dibutylphthalate and a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, and (3) di-2-ethylhexylphthalate and a vinyl chloride/ butyl acrylate copolymer.ALSO:Paper and foils may be coated with heat sensitive adhesive compositions prepared by mixing an aqueous dispersion of a thermoplast and an aqueous dispersion of a plasticizer that is solid at room temperature, optionally together with a normally liquid plasticiser. Specified thermoplasts are polymers of vinyl chloride and of vinyl, acrylic, methacrylic and crotonic esters. Specified solid plasticisers are diphenyl, dicyclohexyl, dimethylcyclohexyl and methyl phenyl phthalates, N-alkylated toluenesulphonamides and alkyl p-toluenesulphonates. Specified liquid plasticisers are di-2-ethylhexyl, dibutyl and diisobutyl phthalates. In examples paper is coated with aqueous dispersions comprising dicyclohexyl phthalate and (1) polyvinyl propionate and a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, (2) dibutyl phthalate and a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer and (3) di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate and a vinyl chloride/butyl acrylate copolymer, optionally with a thickener such as casein, carboxymethyl cellulose, starch, an alginate or a polyacrylate.
