Abstract

An alkali-soluble copolymer comprises a terpolymer of a vinyl ester of a saturated carboxylic acid, an ester of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and at least 3% (based on the total esters) of acrylic acid. The vinyl ester may be vinyl acetate and the other ester may be dibutyl maleate or fumarate. The terpolymer may be produced by emulsion polymerizing the monomers at a pH of less than 7 (preferably greater than 3) an aqueous mixture of the monomers, dextrin, sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate, potassium persulphate and potassium bicarbonate; the monomers being added in increments to the reactor. The above emulsion may be turned into a solution, by addition of ammonia, which may be used to form films.ALSO:Paper is impregnated with an aqueous solution of an alkali-soluble copolymer comprising a terpolymer of a vinyl ester of a saturated carboxylic acid, an ester of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and at least 3% (based on the total esters) of acrylic acid.ALSO:Paper and textiles are coated with a composition which comprises an aqueous solution of an alkali, e.g. ammonia, and an alkali-soluble copolymer comprising a terpolymer of a vinyl ester of a saturated carboxylic acid, an ester of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and at least 3% (based on the total esters) of acrylic acid.
