Abstract

Stable polyvinyl acetal dispersions are obtained by heating a minture of a polyvinyl acetal, water, an anion-active emulsifier and one or more auxiliary dispersing compounds to form a viscous and kneasable mass, and incorporating water into the mass by kneading and cooling until inversion to a resin-in-water type dispersion occurs. The dispersing compounds may be (a) esters of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid having 1 to 6 carbon atoms with an aliphatic monohydric alcohol having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, (b) an aliphatic acetal which is sparingly soluble in water, or (c) a halogen derivative of an acyclic hydrocarbon having 1-6 carbon atoms that is sparingly soluble in water. The dispersing compound is preferably carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, trichloroethylene or perchlorethylene and may be added in an amount of 5-25% based on the weight of polyvinyl acetal. The anion-active emulsifier may be an alkali-metal salt of a long chain fatty acid and may be added in an amount of 4 to 6%. In examples, the following substances are used as dispersing compounds: (1) butyl acetate, (2) isoamyl acetate, (3) perchloroethylene, (4) di-n-propyl acetal, (5) carbon tetrachloride, (6) trichloroethylene, (7) dibutyl acetal, (8) dipropyl formal, (9) dipropyl propional and (10) isoamyl acetal.
