Abstract

Quick drying products comprise a mixture of (a) a coal tar oil having a boiling point in the range 200 DEG to 300 DEG C., (b) an aqueous dispersion of a plasticized polyvinyl ester, or a copolymer of a vinyl ester or a mixture of such a copolymer and a plasticized polyvinyl ester, the quantity of coal tar oil lying between 20 and 100 parts by weight per 50 parts by weight of polymer, and (c) pigments in an amount of from 0,5 to 0,8 parts by weight per part of polymer dispersion. The polyvinyl esters may be plasticized externally, e.g. with phosphoric or phthalic acid esters, or internally with small quantities of higher vinyl esters or esters of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids. Preferred polyvinyl esters are polyvinyl acetate and propioate, and the preferred copolymer is a vinyl acetate-vinyl chloride copolymer. The pH of the dispersions is preferably adjusted to between 7 and 8, e.g. with ammonia. The compositions may also comprise fungicides and insecticides, e.g. pentachlorophenol, sodium pentachlorophenate, hexachlorocyclohexane, phenyl mercury oleate or acetate, fluorides or boron salts.
