Abstract

918,488. Mono-rail locomotives. HUNSLET (HOLDINGS) Ltd. Aug. 15, 1961 [Aug. 26, 1960], No. 29494/60. Class 79(1). A mono-rail locomotive is suspended from an overhead rail 11 by rollers or wheels 10 mounted in plates 12, the vehicle being pivoted at 13 at each end to a beam 14 pivoted at 15 to a plate 12 and each beam 14 carrying a driving wheel 16 urged upwardly into contact with the underside of rail 11 by the weight of the vehicle, the distance between the wheel pivot 18 and the pivot 15 being less than the distance between the pivots 13 and 15, both distances being measured parallel to the rail, whereby a mechanical advantage is obtained to prevent wheel slip. The wheels 16, which may have pneumatic tyres, are, driven from a mechanism 17. The beams 14 may be formed as springs. The system may be applied to a mono-rail locomotive mounted on a groundsupported rail.
