Abstract

1326310 Railway vehicle undercarriages SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIV - UND MASCHINENFABRIK 12 Nov 1971 [16 Nov 1970] 52733/71 Heading B7L A rail locomotive comprises a body 1 supported, at three or more support zones spaced lengthwise of the locomotive, by springs which are non-variable-rate springs 5 at one or more support zones and are adjustable springs such as air springs 6 at one or more other support zones, the adjustable springs having control means, arranged to adjust their spring force in dependence upon the tractive effort exerted by the locomotive, such as a transducer 13 on draw hook 12 connected to a pressure regulator 10 in the compressed air line 11 supplying the springs 6. When there are three support zones only, the springs at the outer zones may be non- variable-rate springs 5, as shown, or may be adjustable (air) springs (20), as in Fig. 2 (not shown), in which latter case there may be an independent pressure regulator (23 or 24) for the springs at each outer zone. The locomotive may be supported by bogies I, II and III or by individual axles at the support zones. The control means are preferably such that, when the loading at more than one support zone is reduced, it is reduced to the same extent at all these zones. The air line 11 may include a reser. voir (30), Fig. 3 (not shown), so that the spring force of spring 6 is substantially unaltered when the gradient of the track upon which the locomotive runs is varied.
