Abstract

1337633 Air cushion vehicles BERTIN & CIE 19 May 1971 [20 May 1970] 15853/71 Heading B7K A ground effect machine travels along a fixed track 7 with the aid of cushions 1-6, 10 and 11-17 which are resiliently connected to the machine structure 18 in such a way that the forces transmitted thereto by consecutive cushions decrease from "master" cushions 1, 11. The connexions are effected by "balloons" 19-25, 27-32; pressurized fluid is supplied to balloons 21, 19 corresponding to the cushions 1, 11 and from these to each of the other balloons in sequence with balloons 25, 30 and 28, 32 being connected to atmosphere whereby the pressure in any balloon is smaller in proportion as that balloon is further from the balloon 1 or 11. On straight track the daylight clearance is least for the cushions 1, 11 which serve to guide the machine; on a curve cushion 5 (as shown) is the first to move towards the track, and its pressure increases. Balloon 25 is then compressed so that some clearance is retained, the increased pressure in this balloon being transmitted to the other balloons in sequence as far as balloon 21. Thus the force transmitted to the structure is spread along the cushions and local stressing is avoided. The connection between the balloons need not be between adjacent balloons, and the pressure differences between the individual balloons or between balloons 1 and 11 need not be the same. The cushions need not be arranged symmetrically of the "master" cushions.
