Abstract
917,198. Measuring fluid flow electrically. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd., and SIMONCARVES Ltd. March 8, 1961 [March 17, 1960], No. 9462/60. Class 40 (1). The rate of flow of a liquid in a duct is determined by measuring the heat required to maintain a locally mounted thermocouple at a constant temperature, or by noting the thermocouple output for a fixed heating input, the thermocouple being mounted so as not to impede the fluid flow. As shown, a metal bobbin 4 is held in a counterbored hole 2 in the wall 1 of a duct by an insulating bridge 5, 9, with the end surface 6 in the plane of the wall 1. Inside the bobbin 4 is a former 7 wound externally with a heating coil, and with a thermocouple 8 through its centre, the hot end being attached to the surface 6. The relationship between the power input to the heating coil and the temwhen one is held constant, is indicative of the mass rate of flow of fluid along the duct wall 1. A plurality of thermocouples may be used, preferably disposed in a line at right-angles to the fluid flow, and the temperature rise determined by measuring the ambient temperature of the fluid with a further thermocouple.
