[Also in Group XXV] In a method of assessing the moisture content of a moving granular mass, the heat loss of a heated body within the mass is measured. In Fig. 1 a tube 1 is located, by supports 3, with its longitudinal axis parallel to the direction of flow of the moving granular material. The tube contains a mass 7 which is electrically heated and is provided with thermocouples 5 and 6 to measure respectively the temperature of mass 7 and the temperature of the granular material upstream of the heated mass. The heated mass consists of a metal block 8, Fig. 2, within which are mounted four electrical resistance heating elements 9 connected in series, asbestos fibre filling the space between the elements and insulating discs 10. The heated block is held in position in the tube by means of rod 16a attached to a plug 12 (see Group XXV). In an alternative arrangement two probes are used mounted side-by-side one containing the heated block and its thermocouple and the other containing the reference thermocouple. In either case the reference thermocouple may be mounted on a metal block similar to the heated block in order to equate the thermal capacities of the thermocouples.
