Abstract
916,926. Cooling pistons. SOC. CIVILE D'ETUDES MAREP-GROSSHANS-OLLIER. Sept. 29, 1960 [Sept. 29, 1959], No. 33412/60. Class 122 (1). In a piston and connecting-rod assembly the piston 1 is cooled by an internal cooling circuit supplied with liquid from an external source and having an outlet port 14 opening opposite the gudgeon-pin 10 and the connecting-rod 8 is formed with a cavity 15 in which liquid issuing from the outlet port 14 is collected. The piston has an annular chamber 2 supplied through a conduit 7 in the piston skirt with oil or other liquid coolant under pressure. Coolant is supplied to the conduit 7 by a jet, flexible tube or telescopic tubes and a passage 13 in the piston connects the chamber 2 with the outlet port 14. In operation, coolant collects in the cavity 15 when the piston accelerates in one direction and is projected therefrom to cool the underside of the piston head when the piston accelerates in the opposite direction.
