Abstract

A polycrystalline sheet material having the grains predominantly oriented in the (110) [001] direction consists of (by weight) Si 1.5-4%, V up to 0.15%, Fe and impurities the balance. The material is prepared by (1) forming an ingot of the alloy in which the N2 incidentally present combines with some of the V to form VN, (2) hot-rolling the ingot to form sheet less than 150 mils. in thickness, (3) cold-rolling the sheet with at least 40% reduction in thickness, (4) annealing the cold-worked sheet in a nitrogen-rich atmosphere (e.g. two-thirds N2 and one-third H2) to form additional VN dispersion and develop the required grain orientation, and (5) re-annealing the sheet at 1050 DEG C. or more for a short time to decompose the VN and remove N2 from the material. Step (4) may consist in heating rapidly to 1000 DEG C. and then heating to 1100 DEG C. at 7 DEG C. per minute.
