Tubes b in which air is heated, extend substantially vertically across a horizontal or inclined heating gas duct a, the tubes being disposed in one or more rows forming a wall or walls receiving heat on both sides and the leading tubes in the direction of gas flow being protected by further tubes k through which flows a separate cooling medium such as water or steam. The tubes in each row may extend between headers located respectively above and below the duct, and in a two-pass air heater described, the air flows upwardly in one tube group located downstream of a second tube group through which the air flows downwardly (Fig. 3, not shown).
