Abstract

[Also in Group XXVIII] In a pressure fluid-operated driving device for welding tongs, comprising a cylindrical casing 1 forming a first chamber, an outer piston 2 is slidable in the chamber, an inner piston 3 is slidable in the outer piston and defines therewith a second chamber, the casing has at one end a central opening 19 communicating with one of the chambers and one of the pistons has a central opening 20 leading from the opposite end of the casing and communicating with the other chamber, pressure fluid being supplied to the central openings. A piston 3 is fitted within a cup-shaped piston 2 in turn fitted within a cup-shaped casing 1 and slidable on a guide pin 4. The pin 4 and piston 2 have stroke limiting stop surfaces 15, 16 and a ring 17 on the piston 2 forms a stop for a surface 18 on the piston 3, a dust excluding leather or rubber collar 12 being attached to the casing and the piston 3. Central nylon seats 19, 20 are provided on the casing and piston 3 and fluid, e.g. air, is supplied beneath piston 2 via the seat 19 and passage 22 and beneath the piston 3 via seat 20 and passage 23. The assembly may be fitted between the arms of a suspended spot welder having spherical-ended journals 29, 30 to fit the seats on the assembly, the journals being normally spring urged together by spring 31. Both pistons are supplied with air during welding and if the electrodes 32 are to be widely spaced to clear work 36 air is withdrawn from both pistons, but if only a small spacing is required air is withdrawn from beneath only the upper piston.
