[Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] In a fluid-pressure-operated double-acting piston-device for raising and lowering bottles in bottle-treating machines, such as capping-machines, comprising a fluid-pressure cylinder, a differential-area piston therein, a piston-rod carrying at its end remote from the piston a bottle support, a number of channels allowing fluid-pressure communication between the pressure source and the upper part of the cylinder, and a control valve, preferably in the form of a slide valve, in the base of the cylinder, the valve is adapted to place the non-annular side of the piston in communication alternately with the pressure supply and to exhaust or atmosphere, whilst maintaining the smaller or annular side permenently under fluid pressure. An outer tube 24 attached at its top end to a disc 14, houses an outer cylinder-jacket 1, the latter being secured to an inner cylinder-jacket 3 so arranged as to form an annular fluid-space 8 between the two jackets. The tubular piston-rod 12, which is spaced from the inner cylinder-jacket 3 to form an annular chamber 18 that communicates with the fluid space 8 through a port 17 in the inner cylinder-jacket 3, has the differential piston 2 at its lower end. The disc 14 and piston 2 are connected by a spindle 33, the lower end 35 of which protrudes so that in the bottom portion of piston travel it throttles a duct 27 and at the same time provides a pistonassembly air-buffer. When the disc 14 is to be lifted, the slide valve 26 is moved to connect fluid under pressure from a supply conduit 21 through duct 23, valve chamber 25 and the duct 27 to the space below the piston 2. The supply conduit 21 is permanently connected to the fluid space 8 through one or more channels 22. To lower the disc 14 the slide valve 26 is returned to its original position and the space below the piston is connected with a reservoir (not shown) by means of a duct 29; the pressure on the upper piston-surface 19 lowers the piston assembly at a rate which is controlled by the slide valve. The slide valve 26 is cam-operated.
