Abstract

915,498. Connecting-rods. LINDE'S EISMASCHINEN A.G., GES. FUR. Nov. 1, 1961 [Nov. 2, 1960], No. 39092/61. Class 122 (1). In an hydraulic energy converter comprising a number of pistons axially movable in cylinders disposed in and parallel to the axis of a cylindrical drum, each piston has its connecting-rod 22 pivotally mounted in the piston with resilient material 10 located between the connecting. rod and the piston skirt 9 and in contact with the skirt and/or the connecting-rod. The connecting- rod is mounted in the piston by means of a ball-shaped head 13 and is retained therein by means of a tension ring mounted in a groove 14 in the piston. Lubricant is supplied to the head 13 through a bore 4. The resilient material is disposed around a tapered portion 16 of the connecting rod, the shank portion 17 of which makes live contact with a conical surface 18 adjacent the open end of the skirt. The foot of the connecting-rod is formed with a ball 5 which is retained by rings 7, 8 in a flange 6 on a shaft which rotates about an axis inclined to the drum axis. In a modification, the portion of the connecting-rod between the balls 5, 13 is of uniform diameter and is retained in the piston solely by the resilient material which extends to the extremity of the open end of the skirt. The resilient material may be vulcanized to the piston skirt and/or the connecting-rod or it may be retained within the piston by a ridge on the internal surface of the skirt or by a tension ring.
