819,114. Making pistons and connecting rods. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Nov. 15, 1957 [Dec. 5, 1956], No. 35717/57. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXVI] A piston 10 has a ball 12 welded at 14 to the edge of a recess 13 formed in the underside of the head whilst a connecting-rod 11 has a spherical cavity 15 formed at its upper end to engage the ball, the cavity being initially provided with a cylindrical portion 16, Fig. 1, which, during assembly, is spun over to engage the ball by inclining the rod 11 and rotating it during the application of a heavy axial load, relative to a conical pocket 17, Fig. 2, formed in the piston.
