Abstract
905,638. Connecting-rods. CHABOT, F., and JUSTINIEN, M. Feb. 23, 1961 [Feb. 23, 1960; April 12, 1960; July 5, 1960], No. 6761/61. Class 122 (1). An internal-combustion engine connecting- rod 2, Fig. 3, is elastically connected to a piston 1 extending laterally of one extremity of the rod by linking means, such as a gudgeon pin 8, extending transversely of the rod 2 into a hole formed therein, or in the piston, near the extremity of the rod and bounded by rod or piston bearing surfaces which face corresponding surfaces on the linking means and are separated therefrom by a gap which is at least almost filled with a member 12 of elastic material. The connecting rod may be connected at its other extremity to a crank-shaft in a similar manner. As shown, the pin 8 is received in bores 1<SP>1</SP> in the piston and the members 12 are in the form of rings retained by open elastic washers 13. The internal surface of each boss may be oval and the ring of uniform thickness ; alternatively, the surface is circular and the ring is of non- uniform thickness, the thickest part facing the direction of maximum pressure which occurs in the engine cylinder on ignition. In modifications : (a) an elastic ring 19, Fig. 6, which may consist of semicircular parts, is mounted between the connecting rod and the gudgeon pin; (b) elastic rings are mounted between the pin and both the connecting-rod and the piston bosses; (c) rings 36, Fig. 26, of irregular crosssection and varying thickness and having metal reinforcements 37, 38 are inserted in correspondingly-shaped portions in the piston bosses, the rings having circular bores; alternatively, the pin ends and the ring bore surfaces are formed with flats A; (d) the piston is linked to the connecting-rod by a pin 8 which extends through an annular block 7, Fig. 1, axially movably mounted in the piston between an elastic ring 5 mounted within a cage 6 and an elastic washer 10 supported by a washer 9 held in a groove in the piston. The elastic ring may consist of layers 25<SP>1</SP>, 25<SP>2</SP> reinforced by a thin metal annulus 26, Fig. 14, and may be pre-compressed between thin metal annuli 27, 28 which are wider than the ring; alternatively, the annuli and the ring are of the same width and the edges of the ring layers are provided with circular grooves. The rings may also be formed with suitable profiles, Fig. 25, both in the radial and axial directions. A reinforced ring may be held in a piston by an elastic washer 35, Fig. 23, engaging annular grooves in the piston and ring ; the inner metal annulus may be formed with a stop bead 34<SP>1</SP>. The elastic material may consist of a Silastene, a fluorocarbon rubber, or a copolymer of hexafluoropropene and vinylidene fluoride.
