Abstract
914,400. Gas-blast switches. REYROLLE & CO. Ltd., A. May 2, 1961 [May 6, 1960], No. 16206/60. Class 38 (5). A gas-blast switch includes an interrupter unit having a chamber 11 filled with compressed gas and providing upstream and downstream compartments 12, 13, interconnected by a nozzle 16, separable contacts 22, 26 for drawing an arc which is positioned substantially wholly in the downstream compartment 13, and differential pistons 17, 18 driven by the rise in pressure produced in the chamber by the heat of the arc to force a blast of gas through the nozzle 16 to extinguish the arc. In the two-break arrangement shown, the movable contacts 26 are carried by a bridging-piece 27 slidably mounted on a piston-rod 19 interconnecting the pistons 17, 18 and biased towards a flange 28 on the rod 19 by springs 29. A kick-off spring 33 acts on the piston 17 and the contacts are closed by an operating lever 38 and opened on the release of a latch 30, 31 by a trip coil 34. The unit is housed in an outer container 10 of metal or insulating material. The gases in the container 10 and chamber 11 may be at the same or different pressures and may be gases of the same or different type.
