Abstract
A free monocarboxylic acid or a fraction of two or more free monocarboxylic acids is obtained from a mixture containing alkali metal salts of the acid or acids and of one or more monocarboxylic acids having fewer carbon atoms, by treating an aqueous alkaline solution of the said salts with a mineral acid to lower the pH to a value at which the higher acid or acids are precipitated but at which the alkali metal salts of the acid or acids having fewer carbon atoms remain in solution, separating the higher acid(s) liberated as an acid phase and washing it to remove any occluded metal salts of the lower acid(s). The process is applicable to aliphatic and aromatic acids and is particularly suitable for the separation of acids from a mixture of salts obtained by treating alcohols, produced by hydrogenation of oxo aldehydes, with caustic alkali. For example C8 and C16 acids or C10 and C20 acids may be separated from mixtures containing their alkali metal salts.
