Abstract

500,746. Fatty acids and nitrates. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges.) Sept. 16, 1937, No. 25183. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group III] Salts of fatty acids comprising preponderating amounts of fatty acids of high molecular weight, particularly alkali or alkaline earth salts, are decomposed with dilute nitric acid, the free fatty acids are separated, the aqueous solution is concentrated without previous neutralization and the crystallized nitrates are separated. The mother liquor remaining is added to a fresh batch of fatty acid salts before adding the nitric acid. Soap solutions obtained in any way, e.g. those formed by the saponification of naturally occurring fats with alkali or alkaline earth hydroxides, may be used for the process. Oxidation products of paraffin waxes which may also be derived from petroleum, tar or hydrogenation products of coals and the like, or products of the catalytic reaction of carbon monoxide and hydrogen without pressure, may be worked up in this way. Specifications 396,769 and 487,317, [both in Group III], arc referred to.
