Abstract
Pentaerythritol and calcium or sodium formate are recovered from the mother liquor, obtained by condensing acetaldehyde and formaldehyde in the presence of sodium or calcium formate, by adding methanol to the mother liquor to precipitate the calcium or sodium formate which is separated and crystallising pentaerythritol from the residual liquor or recycling the residual liquor to a subsequent process for preparing pentaerythritol, the pentaerythritol in the recycled liquor being obtained together with that produced in the subsequent process. The mother liquor is defined as that remaining after separation of most of the pentaerythritol and polypentaerythritols. Preferably the mother liquor is concentrated to eliminate from 50 to 8% of the water present before precipitating the sodium or calcium formate.
