Abstract

913,056. Sampling liquids. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. June 11, 1959 [June 12, 1958], No. 18768/58. Class 106 (5). A device for sampling liquids at a depth below the surface, for example, in bore holes or wells, comprises a cylindrical chamber 2 into which are screwed a nose cap 1 and a valve body 3, the valve body having a pair of flat or part-cylindrical valves 14 and 15 which control ports 9, 10 and have heads 16 which are adapted to be struck by a messenger 30 which is allowed to slide down the suspension cable 25 when the sampler has been lowered to a desired depth. The valves are surrounded by an apertured sleeve 19 which is secured to the valve body by a bolt 23 on which the thimble 24 of the suspension cable can be mounted and each valve is pressed against the valve body by a spring 20 adjustable by a grub screw 28. One of the ducts 11 leading from the valve ports is extended to near the bottom of the chamber by a tube 13 and, if it is desired to have part of the sample free from contamination by the walls of the chamber, this tube may be sealed to, or form part of, a sterile inner container. The messenger 31 has a split collet 32 which screws into the upper end 31 and also has a radial slit by which the messenger can be introduced laterally on to the cable 25.
