Abstract
971,745. Analytical sample-receiving assemblies. BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS Inc. Dec. 12, 1962 [Dec. 26, 1961], No. 46917/62. Heading B1X. A cuvette assembly for receiving liquid samples for photometric analysis comprises a cuvette 25 communicating at the lower portion thereof with a tube 23 opening into a test tube 70 from which the sample is to be withdrawn, said tube 23 being associated with a piston 65 co-operating with said test tube to form a pump for liquid to and from the cuvette. The numerals refer to the preferred embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in which the cuvette is supported in bores 16, 17 in holder 11 and head member 12. A plug 20 supports the cuvette and receives one end of the tube 23 which is of capillary size. The cuvette 25 has a flat sided portion 26 of known volume. It is held in place by ring member 28. Holder 11 is provided with a bored hole 29 which intersects bore 16 at right angles so that the narrowed portion 26 of cuvette 25 can be disposed in the light path of a suitable optical analysing apparatus, for example a colorimeter. A mechanical plunger assembly 40 serving to clean and flush the cuvette resides in a hole 41, and comprises a sleeve 43 having a hole 44 drilled therethrough. In the upper portion of hole 44 a spring 47 serves to return piston 51 after use. A hole 54 runs the length of piston 51, through which liquid washing material may be introduced. With hole 54 covered, pumping down on the plunger serves to force the liquid through the cuvette and out via capillary 23. Capillary tube 23 extends from plug 20 into a vertical capillary hole 58 and thence into a nozzle assembly 60 which comprises a screw part 62 with a vent hole 63, a member 64 fitted to part 62 having a large end 65 fitting tightly within a test tube 70. Tube 64 is bored out to provide passage for the gas between tube 70 and vent 63 ; capillary tube 23 passes down this bore into the liquid in the test tube. Upon movement of the piston portion 65, with vent 63 closed liquid may be drawn out of, or returned to the test tube. Once the liquid is flowing between the test tube and cuvette then hole 63 may be uncovered and then the remaining liquid siphons into the cuvette.
