Abstract
1442792 Sample cells AUTOCHEM INSTRUMENT AB 11 Dec 1973 [20 Dec 1972] 57318/73 Heading G2J A sample cell unit for photometric testing of liquids comprises one or more sample cells 8, 10 which communicate with an input pipette 3 and an output capillary tube 14, the tube 14 opening into an exhaust chamber 15 to which is applied a first sub-pressure to draw a sample from a test tube 2 into the sample cells and a greater sub-pressure in order to draw liquid from the sample cells into the chamber 15 and thence to a drain hole 12. The sample cells are defined by diametrical bores through a cylindrical body 5 housed within a transparent tube 6. The first sub-pressure applied to the chamber 15 is sufficient to draw liquid through the sample cells and a chamber 13 into the capillary tube 14. Any impurities in the sample cells are thus washed away by liquid which passes into the chamber 13 before tests are carried out. As shown in Fig. 1 the tube 14 extends into an inverted funnel 36 which may be dampened with a foamquenching liquid if the sample under investigation generates foam. Bundles of optical fibres 23, 24, 27, 28 transmit light from a source through the cells 8, 10 to recording means such as photo-cells. Fluorescent measurements of a sample may be obtained by recording light directed from the sample along a light guide which extends at right angles from the centre of each sample cell.
