Abstract

1,102,731. Testing the hardness of soil. STICHTING WATERBOUWKLINDIG LABORATORIUM. June 8, 1965, No.24125/65. Heading G1S. In a soil testing device for separately and directly measuring the core and frictional resistances applied by the soil to a pile or the like, there is provided a tube 1, at one end of which a conical tip 6 is mounted by a first force meassuring means 5, a jacket 10 coupled to the tube by a second force measuring means e.g. a rod 13, which is positioned between the seatings 12, 15 of respective bridge pieces 8, 16, bridge piece 8 extending through a slot in the tube 1 to abut the jacket 10. O-rings 17, 18 are provided to seal the jacket with respect to the tube on either side of the slot. The force measuring means may include electrical strain gauges the leads of which extend through a central bore of the device. An extension tube 4 may be screwed into the main tube 1 at 3. The device may also be provided with electrodes for measuring the conductivity of the soil.
