Abstract

1,068,153. Strain gauges. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. Jan.27, 1964 [Jan. 25, 1963], No. 3222/63. Heading G1N. The vibrating wire 10 of a strain gauge is contained in a tube 20 which carries a cup-like unit 21 threaded at 22 to receive a casing 24 in which an electromagnet is mounted so that its poles 23 are adjacent the wire when the casing is screwed into position. Two conductors 31, 32 of a cable 30 are permanently connected to the electromagnet, and a further two may be connected to a thermocouple 35 or a thermistor, to monitor temperature. The ends of the wire are clamped to discs 12 each mounted in a sealed cavity constituted by a flanged member 15 and an end cap 16 which are united by a threaded collar 17 and sealed with an O-ring 18. Wire tension is adjustable by set screws 40, 41, 42, and if the gauge is to be embedded in concrete to measure the stress therein, it may be constructed in the manner described and claimed in Specification 924,381.
