Abstract
1,238,947. Measuring stress electrically. F. R. DYBEL. Sept.23, 1968 [Sept.25, 1967], No.45178/68. Heading G1N. A stress sensor 1 on a press comprises two brackets 13, 14 screwed into a connecting rod 2 and aligned parallel to the direction of stress so that part of it is applied to a Piezo-electric transducer 3 clamped between insulating balls 15, 16 with a predetermined pressure set by a screw 17, the Piezo-electric crystal 4 supplying an output signal via terminals 9, 10 to a circuit which either isolates the press from its power supply at a predetermined overload stress or counts the number of press operations in response to a predetermined working load stress. The transducer is shielded by a metal sheet 7 at earth potential insulated from terminal blocks 5, 6 by spacers 8. One of the balls 15, 16 may be conductive allowing the transducer to be earthed through the press. A gas-filled valve 23 is biased just to non-conduction so that a predetermined maximum stress causes the output signal of the transducer, modified by an R-C circuit, to bring the valve into conduction, lighting a lamp L and operating a relay 24 which controls an isolator and/or summing counter. A bias control potentiometer 20 has a calibrated control dial allowing the maximum stress to be pre-set.
