For indicating when a predetermined tension has been applied to a bolt 1 during tightening, the stem 7 of a gauge is inserted in a bore 4 in the bolt 1 and spring-urged against a micrometer screw 15, while spigots threaded into blind bores 6 in the bolt 1 pass through apertures 13 of a flange 11 screwed on to a thread 8 on the stem 7. The flange, which is machined from insulating material such as ebonite carries contact pins in bores 14 through which an electric circuit is completed when the bolt is extended by the presetting of the micrometer screw 15. The stem 7 may be made of the same material as the bolt 1 to avoid errors due to temperature change.
