Abstract

882,445. Measuring electrically. KUTSAY, A. U. Nov. 19, 1958, No. 37171/58. Class 40 (1). A strain gauge comprises a resistance unit which consists of a slender cylindrical core with the gauge wire bonded to the exterior surface, and a bolt, test piece, or other structural element, with a hole, whose axis is at the neutral axis of the element, into which the resistance unit is bonded. The gauge wire is wound on to the core in such a way that its main component of length is parallel with the longitudinal axis of the core, examples are given in Figs. 3 to 8, of which only 4 and 7 are shown. The core may be of metal or plastic with the gauge wire bonded to it by synthetic resin and the resistance unit may be bonded to the, e.g. bolt, as shown in Fig. 1, by synthetic resin, or alternatively if the core is of metal it may be shrunk by inserting it in liquid air and then allowed to expand in the hole in the bolt. To ensure good contact between the resistance unit and the bolt the interior of the hole may be roughened or threaded.
