Abstract

861,856. Resistance strain gauges. AMERY Ltd., W. & T. Aug. 10, 1957, N0. 25309/57. Class 40 (1). Resistance strain gauges for use in measuring vibrations and fatigue endurance are made with the resistance wire screen at one end and the fixing points of the connecting wires at the other, the wires of the screen being extended and joined to leads at a point which is distant from the screen by an amount greater than the length of the screen. Thus the screen is located at a position of maximum alternating stress and the fixing points at positions of minimum alternating stress. When the test piece is of varying cross-section (Fig. 1) the resistance element is located at the thinnest part 1 and the leads 4, 5 at a wider part. In the case of a uniform piece 8 (Fig. 3) a special piece 9 is welded on to it to give support, the resistance element being at 10 as before. Preferably, the distance of the fixing points from the nearer end of the resistance element is one to three times the length of the latter. The extension of the screen wires may be of uniform crosssection (Fig. 2, not shown) or gradually increasing cross-section (Fig. 4, not shown).
