Abstract

Bar-type dynamometer, working in compression or extension, has electrical resistance extensometer gauges attached to it. Four gauges with thin threads are positioned at the ends of two orthogonal diameters of the bar and make up two opposing arms of a Wheatstone bridge network. Such an arrangement, with some gauges (21-24) orientated in the longitudinal direction of the bar and others (31-32) in the transverse direction, enables corrections to be made for sensitivity to bending. The longitudinal gauges are made from an alloy whose Poisson number is as near as possible to that of the bar material.
