Abstract
1,020,356. Measuring strain electrically. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. April 2, 1964, No. 13722/64. Addition to 1,008,627. Heading G1N. A device measuring the strain in a pressure vessel comprises a frame 11, 12 surrounding the vessel and mechanically connected to it by a plurality of struts 15 with one or more strain gauges on reduced cross-section parts 13 of the frame (the foregoing as in the parent Specification), with the added feature of one or more thermistors 24 contacting the vessel, and a bridge containing the strain gauges 14 and thermistors 24 (Fig. 4 not shown) or two bridges in series one containing the gauges 14 (Fig. 3) and one containing the thermistors 24. The output of the one bridge, or the combined output from the two, provides an amplifier 31 and indicator 32 with a signal representing the strain independent of the effects of temperature on the vessel, on the frame, and on the gauges. Self compensating strain gauges may be used.
