Abstract
912,724. Water heaters. JUNKERS & CO. G.m.b.H. Oct. 19, 1960 [Oct. 20, 1959], No. 35793/60. Class 64 (1). In a " balanced flue " gas-fired water heater comprising a combustion chamber 16 located within a gas-light casing 14 and having an outlet flue 17 which leads to the outside atmosphere through an aperture 12 in a wall 11, the aperture constituting the air inlet for the gas burner 27, the possibility of the freezing of the water supplied to the heater when the outside temperature is below 0 C. with consequent damage to the water fittings as the cold air is drawn in is avoided by arranging for the air to be heated slightly. In the form shown a thermostat bulb 30 is provided in the aperture 12 and communicates with a gas valve 33 fitted in a branch pipe extending upwardly from the pipe 34 supplying the heater pilot-jet. The branch pipe has a row of holes and terminates in a burner jet. When the air temperature falls to, say, 0 C., the valve is opened and the pilot-jet ignites the gas issuing from the holes and then the burner jet to warm the incoming air. In a modification the burner may be ignited catalytically or by a flash tube or the thermostat may operate a switch to energize an electric heater disposed in the aperture 12.
