Abstract
911,498. Injection-moulding machines. PROJECTILE & ENGINEERING CO. Ltd., GASPAR, E., MUNNS, M. G., and BUTLER, R. A. Oct. 7, 1960 [Nov. 10, 1959], No. 38117/59. Class 87(2). An axially reciprocable screw in the feed cylinder of an injection moulding machine has a piston head on the end nearer the nozzle; the head being provided with a passage, controlled by a non-return ball valve, through which plastic material is fed. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, feed screw 15 has a tapered nose 17 screwed thereto and a piston head 16 integral therewith. The piston head 16 has a plurality of axial passages 21 therethrough which open into an annular groove and are closed at their knife-edge seatings 25 by balls 26 which prevent the back flow of material on axial movement of the screw 15. In the embodiment of Figs. 2-6, (not shown), the nose 17 is integral with the piston head 16 which is bored by four inclined passages having openings 28, 29 and balls 29 which are retained in position by the cylinder wall prevent back flow into said latter openings. The passages do not cross the piston axis.
