An automatic narrowing apparatus for parallel machines, mounted on extensions of the cam slide, has loop transfer points 6 which are cranked so that grooved loop-receiving feet 7 thereof are substantially parallel to the needle stems and directed towards their heads and the points are swingably mounted at their other ends on a substantially horizontal shaft 5 located above the outer edge of the knockover comb 2; and either the points are mounted with longitudinal play on the shaft 5, as shown, or the shaft is movable, so that the points, in their swinging movement, first come to lie with the tips of their grooved feet on the corresponding needle stems and finally lie with the whole of those feet on the stems so that the side walls of the grooves 8 substantially cover the stems whilst the tips of the feet remain in contact therewith. Two simultaneously operated groups of points, one for each needle bed, may be arranged opposite to each other; or, during the narrowing process, the needles in one bed may be pushed out whilst loops are taken by the points associated with the other bed.
