In an electron beam furnace having a beamdeflecting system, a chamber container the deflecting system is separated from the cham. ber containing the material to be heated or melted by a diaphragm or diaphragm system (not shown), to hinder the passage of gas discharge plasma. The beam may be deflected on to an horizontally-fed melt stock. In Fig. 2, the beam is selectively deflected on to the melt stock 5 or on to the melt 8. The material may, however, be introduced in powdered or granular form directly into the crucible 9. In Fig. 3, the material is in the form of a plate 5 which has on its bottom surface a bore 13 determining the depth to which a melt pit is produced in the plate by the beam 1 before the molten material escapes through the bore 13. The radial dimension of the melt pit may be enlarged or adjusted in shape by means of a periodic one-dimensional or two-dimensional deflection of the beam.
