Abstract
1,003,530. Determining molten metal level in a furnace. W.C.HERAEUS G.m.b.H. June 19, 1962 [June 19, 1961], No. 23569/62. Heading G1A. [Also in Division H1] In an electron beam smelting furnace, a radiation detector 20a e.g. a thermocouple or a photo-cell, is arranged to receive radiation from a predetermined zone 22b of crucible 8 immediately above the required maximum height of molten metal 12 therein, so that when the melt reaches this zone an electrical signal is produced and may be used to adjust automatically the lowering speed of the crucible base 14, to maintain the melt level constant. As shown, a further radiation detector 20b is arranged to receive radiation from a zone 22a below the required level of molten metal, to produce a signal which may be used to reduce or even reverse the action of a motor 18 which effects movement of crucible base 14, when the level of molten metal is too low. The detectors 20a 20b are arranged in tubes provided with cooled diaphragms 21 which prevent condensation of metal vapour on the detectors.
