Abstract

908,470. Electropneumatic braking apparatus. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. April 2, 1959 [April 2, 1958], No. 10586/58. Addition to 779,923. Class 103 (1). A brake-controlling device for electropneumatic railway braking apparatus, includes a mercury tube retardation controller T, M having a contact CS constantly immersed in mercury and connected to battery B, a blowdown contact CB and contacts CA, CH connected to relays RA, RH via drum contacts DC, the relays being effective to connect application and holding wires WA, WH to battery B. The device is shown in Fig. 1, in the release position with relays RA, RH de-energized and contact CB is positioned to correspond to a predetermined high rate of retardation with the tube untilted. A circuit between wire WH and battery B includes normally closed contacts of relay RB and a pressure switch PS held open by normal brake pipe pressure. When brake application is initiated pneumatically and independantly of the driver, pressure builds up in the brake cylinder via triple valves, loss of pressure in the brake pipe closes switch PS to energize wire WH to close the holding valve to prevent pressure release via the blow down valve. Should retardation exceed a predetermined rate, the mercury engages contact CB to energize relay RB to disconnect wire WH from battery B and allow the holding valve to open and dissipate pressure until retardation falls below the predetermined rate. In Fig. 2 of the Provisional Specification an additional contact CHM is included below contact CB and switch PS is omitted. As soon as a small retardation is produced the mercury engages CHM to energize relay RH to connect wire WH to the battery and so close the holding valve, contact CB being operative as before. The quantity of mercury need not be so accurately measured in apparatus of Fig. 3 of the Provisional Specification (not shown), since contact CB is arranged between contacts CS and CH and relay RB operates in the reverse manner. A pressure switch PS may be included in the apparatus of Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), and the drum contactor DC may be replaced by a pressure switch. Specification 779,923 is referred to.
