908,250. Band brakes. TEVES, H., TEVES, E. A., and TAUSAND, M., [trading as TEVES MASCHINEN-UND ARMATURENFABRIK KOMM.-GES., A.]. April 5, 1961 [June 4, 1960], No. 12165/61. Class 103 (1). A coupling device between the two pieces of an external band brake is carried in a casing fixed to the brake support and transmits secondary braking action from one piece to the other above a predetermined value. A brake band 3, 4 is contracted on to a drum 1 by cableactuated tongs engaging pins 12, 12<SP>1</SP>, and the band halves are connected by a coupling 5 carried in a casing 6 rigid with a stationary part of the vehicle. A sleeve 19 has limited axial movement against a spring 22 carried in the casing 6 and carries screw adjusters 26, 27 separated and held against rotation by a spring washer 30 engaging radial corrugations in the adjuster ends; the adjusters being screwed on to pins 28, 29 articulated to lugs 13, 13<SP>1</SP> on the brake band. On brake application no secondary force is transmitted from one part of the band to the other until that force is sufficient to overcome the pre-loading of the spring 22. In a second embodiment (Fig. 5), a coupling rod 30 joins the ends of the band pieces, and is surrounded by gripper discs 33, 33<SP>1</SP> fitted on each side of a flanged bush 34 carrying a centring spring 22<SP>1</SP>. In this instance no force is transmitted until that force is sufficient to overcome the action of the gripper discs, the spring 22<SP>1</SP> acting to centralize the sleeve and allow for wear.
