Abstract
903,575. Disc brakes. BENDIX CORPORATION. Nov. 25, 1958, No. 22719/60. Divided out of 898,399. Class 103 (1). A disc brake comprises a pair of discs, one of which is splined to a shaft, the other disc being angularly displaced relative to said one disc when a brake band engages the periphery of the other disc whereby the discs are axially spread apart into flat face engagement with a casing by cams means located between confronting faces of the discs. A brake band 62, 63 is tightened on to the rim 60 of disc 38, supported clear of the rotating shaft 20, to retard the disc 38 causing balls or rollers 48 to move into the shallower parts of complementary conical recesses 44, 34 in discs 28, 38, respectively, to axially move the discs 28, 38 against a fixed casing 10, 12, 14, the discs being biased to the release position by springs 50. The recesses 34, 44 may be formed in the discs 28, 38 or in hardened inserts 36, 46 respectively. The ends of the band 62, 63 are pivoted to actuating toggle linkage 72, 78, 82, 88 by pins 74 carried by shanks 94 screwed into sleeves 98 slidably mounted in casing 14, the outward movement being limited by a head 100 and spring washers 102. On actuation, the band moves with disc 38 intil one head 100 abuts casing 14, the outward movement of the applying linkage being transmitted to the opposite band and, the corresponding sleeve 98 sliding inwardly of the easing. A lock nut 96 on the shank 94 is used to adjust the band clearance of rim 60. The discs are centred relative to the easing by spring-loading plungers 71 in elongated arcuate slots 73 in the discs in slight rubbing contact with the casing. In Fig. 4 (not shown), the band comprises two halves pivoted together on a fixed pivot, the applying linkage being simplified.
