[Also in Group II] In fluid bed apparatus for heating or cooling material in elongate form, for example for cooling steel strip after tempering, comprising an open-topped vessel 1 surrounded by a water jacket 2 and having as its base a porous plate 3 in which are slots 6, 7 for the entry and exit of the strip of material 8 which passes around guide rolls 9, 10, the bed material being fluidized by air which enters a chamber 11 disposed below the plate through an inlet 12 and passing through the plate, the slots 6, 7 are sealed against loss of bed material by jets of air blown through slot-like orifices 15 disposed in the sides of the slots 6, 7. In cross-section the slots converge and then diverge as shown in Fig. 2a each being slightly wider at its narrowest part than the thickness of the strip 8. Air supply tubes 13 located below the plate 3 are connected to air channels 14 which open into the linear orifices 15. The fluidized bed material acts to take up heat from the strip 8 and is itself cooled by the water jacket and the flow of cold fluidizing air. In modifications, the strip may be passed through the vessel in a number of loops, a plurality of openings being provided in the base, and the jet outlets may be arranged as spaced circular orifices.
