Abstract

1489471 Spray producers FIVES-CAIL BABCOCK 3 Jan 1975 [4 Jan 1974 20 March 1974] 287/75 Heading B2F [Also in Division B3] A cooling apparatus for cooling a cast product in a continuous casting process, comprises generally tubular spray producers 30, Fig. 8, disposed parallel to each other, each spray-producer comprising two longitudinal rows of outlet orifices 2, Fig. 1, disposed symmetrically with respect to the longitudinal plane of symmetry 12 of the spray producer and two longitudinal rows of outlets 3 with their axes either being parallel to the plane 12, or inclined to the plane 12, (Fig. 6, not shown), the outlet orifices 2 which open in a first chamber 6, having their axes intersecting each other in the plane 12 and the outlets 3 communicating with a second chamber 7 so that in operation, when pressurized air and water are supplied respectively to the chambers 6 and 7 or 7 and 6, water is atomized and sprays 10 are produced. There may be only one row of outlets 3 with their axes lying in the plane 12, (Fig. 3, not shown), and members 4 and 5 may be concentric, (Figs. 5, 6, not shown). In a modification (Fig. 7, not shown), a middle tube (20) supplied with pressurized water or air, and two side tubes (22, 24) supplied with air or water respectively under pressure are held together by straps or collars. In Fig. 8, the cast product 26 to be cooled is supported and guided by rollers 28 and at least one spray producer is placed between two rollers. Other means for supporting and guiding the cast product, and arrangements of the spray-producers are described, (Figs. 9-11, not shown). Various parameters of the spray-producers are given.
