Abstract
906,333. Two-part couplings. BENDIX CORPORATION. Dec. 15, 1960 [Dec. 17, 1959], No. 43250/60. Class 38 (1). In a plug and socket connector comprising insulating contact-carrying blocks 14, 22, supported in outer metal shells 19, 21, shell 19 has a plurality of radially disposed pins (not shown) receivable in angularly spaced helical grooves 37 in a sleeve 30 rotatable on shell 21 such that on rotating the handgripped disc 31 integral with sleeve 30 the connector parts are drawn together and maintained in operative engagement until a release mechanism is operated. Shell 19 has aligning grooves such as 20<SP>1</SP> for receiving ribs 27<SP>1</SP> on the shell 21, and an annular flange 32 on shell 21 forms an annular space with flanges 34, 35 on disc 31 in which space is a helical wire-spring 36, which is compressed as connector parts 10 and 11 are connected so that the pins on shell 19 are held against seats at the inner ends of grooves 37. The release mechanism is contained in a casing 39 keyed to shell 21 behind disc 31 and comprises an explosive cartridge 49 mounted in a bore 50 in an extension 54 of the casing 39 and which, when electrically ignited, causes a bellows 51 to expand to thrust a driving member 59 clockwise (as shown), which in turn rotates an abutment 60 via a spring 62. Abutment 60 engages shoulder 47 of disc 31 which is thus turned to disconnect the connector parts. Specification 832,869 is referred to.
